Mutual Self-Help Program
The organization purchases land, develops it, and then brings together families who wish to build their homes and communities by participating in a mutual self-help housing program. In the 30+ years HIP has provided affordable housing, population diversity and dispersion of income groups has been one of the organization’s goals. Combining individuals from different backgrounds, life-experiences, race and income levels, has proven successful. Homebuyers work in groups of five to ten under the direction of trained construction supervisors. The supervisors coordinate the work efforts of the homebuyer and subcontractors. Construction supervisors are on site seven days a week to assist families with their “sweat equity” requirements. The supervisor has a checklist of all the work required of the family and dates each item as it is completed. The checklist is one that has been approved by USDA Rural Development for satisfying the family’s commitment to participate in the mutual self-help program. By working together towards a common goal of home ownership, these homeowners bond as friends and neighbors and communities are strengthened.
